I also like the solid feel I get with the darker woods. I am not fond of metal desks. They may have an appropriate time and place, but that is not in my home or office. I like a lot of drawers and space. However, I have seen many home desks imparticular that offer only a basic desktop. If this is for you, that is fine and dandy: I like lots of space. I am not to concerned about whether it has curves or the modern, sharp angles. I just like my space.
